The Sello Ring, or seal ring, draws inspiration from Mesoamerican intaglio like techniques and features a carving of a double headed serpent, a symbol of duality and balance from Mexica ceremonial iconography. Hand cut in Mexico from carnelian and onyx, the ring can be customized with a symbol, initial, number, floral motif, pet silhouette, zodiac sign or more. While Mesoamerican intaglio wasn’t like European gemstone engraving, the Olmec, Maya, and Mexica created deeply carved or incised motifs in materials like jade, shell, bone, and ceramics for decorative and symbolic purposes, often featuring detailed imagery of deities, animals, or glyphs. You can see this approach in pieces like an incised Olmec jadeite axe and a Maya brownware cylinder vessel from Veracruz with abstract mythological and anthropomorphic figures.
