The Sarta Ring is inspired by depictions of beads and necklaces in early colonial manuscripts documenting Mesoamerican life. The Codex Mendoza from the 16th century, documents the Mexica tribute system, where payments such as “dos sartas de chalchihuitl, cuentas y piedras rricas” (“two strings of jade, beads, and precious stones”) were presented to the rulers. The Lienzo de Tlaxcala portrays the “Regalos de los tlaxcaltecas a Cortés” (“Gifts from the Tlaxcaltecs to Cortés”), where offerings of gold, food, textiles, and these same jade beads are depicted as being given. Seen across these manuscripts, the string of green stones, or chalchihuitl, and tuqruoise reveal the enduring spiritual and cultural value of beads in Mesoamerican life.
