Inspired by Mesoamerican pyramids once painted in vivid red tones, The Pyramid Ring features an orange reddish fire opal from Mexico, specially mined in Tequisquiapan and hand cut for this piece. During Mesoamerican times, red pigments, often made from ochre and cinnabar, were widely used to adorn temples, pyramids, and palaces. At Teotihuacan, one of the largest cities in the world at the time and a thriving center for potters, jewelers, and craftspeople, the pyramids of the Sun and the Feathered Serpent were covered in deep red hues, traces of which still remain today.
