The Mosaico Ring, composed of small freeform stones inlaid into the ring, was inspired by Mesoamerican labrets. In some parts of Mexico, the high priest held different ranks, each signified by distinct symbols. The most respected was the bezote, worn in the lower lip. It was often carved from obsidian with a gold mount at the center, accented with turquoise, but also found in crystal and silver. Drawing from color studies of Mesoamerican burial masks made with turquoise, red shell, and various green jade hues, we took inspiration for the colors in each Mosaico Ring composition, turquoise paired with red jasper, and green malachite contrasting with blue lapis lazuli.
