The sate of Queretaro in Mexico is the cradle of opal mining. The most significant fire opal deposits in the world lie here. One of the first and most important mines in Mexico was Hacienda la Esperanza, surrounded by opal-bearing rocks. Aztecs used this stone and called it hummingbird stone due to the iridescent color resemblance with the bird's wings.
